In case you hadn’t heard, mermaid-core is set to be the next big beauty trend, with Pinterest searches for ‘mermaidcore’ skyrocketing by 614% according to a new analysis from fashion site Nasty Gal.

With Google searches for mermaid style also rising by 736% worldwide over the past year, it looks like the power of Disney’s long anticipated live action remake of The Little Mermaid has already found its way into the makeup bags of beauty fans everywhere.

As the trend officially takes off, who better to show us how to wear the style than British actress Ashley Simone, who has a major part as Ariel’s sister Indira in the upcoming movie. As she hit the red carpet for the official UK premiere of Disney’s latest blockbuster, Simone’s effortless take on the mermaid-core trend shows exactly how to wear it without it looking costumey.

Simone Ashley looks stunning as she embraces the mermaid-core trend

Simone's wet look beachy waves were the perfect interpretation of the trend

For the premiere, Simone wore a floor length blush pink gown from Victoria Beckham with a carefully shredded hemline that was giving major underwater inspiration, but it was her hair and makeup that really took the mermaid-inspired look to the next level.

For her hair, celebrity hairstylist Halley Brisker gave Simone some long mermaid waves that reached past her chest and were carefully touselled to give a chic but not too-perfect finish. Calling the look ‘aqua waves’, Halley revealed that he’d used Olaplex products on Simone’s hair, with the ultra glossy shine giving the illusion of a subtle wet look style, without looking too obviously mermaid inspired.

Wet-look hair is already set to be one of the biggest hair trends of the summer, with a whole host of A-listers opting to give their hair a fresh out-of-the-shower illusion during Coachella in April.

Typically done using hair oil and high shine products to give a touselled, ultra-glossy finish, Simone had a less obvious shine to her hair, which when combined with the loose, beachy mermaid waves gave her the perfect wearable variation of the trend that’s easy to copy.

For her makeup look, celebrity makeup artist Alex Babsky opted for a mermaid-inspired colour palette with a deep navy blue smokey eye and a nude lip, with a soft, glowy, natural-looking base.

A blue smokey eye is a great nod to the mermaid-core trend

A colourful smokey eye is the perfect way to get some underwater vibes into your makeup look without looking like you’re trying too hard to look mermaid-inspired. The rich navy blue chosen for Simone suits her skin tone perfectly, and blends a deep, dark blue in the outer corners of her eye into a much brighter, shimmering blue on the centre and inner corners of Simone’s eyes that makes them stand out.

The blue colour scheme was also applied under her eyes and blended into a dramatic, smokey wing, whilst a subtle hint of eyeliner and mascara let the eyeshadow take centre stage without looking too over the top.

The look might not quite include a shell-shaped bra, but we love that The Little Mermaid has become such a style icon.
