If you’ve scrolled through TikTok in recent weeks, you might have spotted a new beauty trend going viral: rosemary oil for hair, lash and brow growth. Thousands of users are taking to the app to share their impressive before and after results from using the natural oil to strengthen and grow their hair.
User Kelsey Soles is leading the viral videos with her clip showing how she grows her lashes using her own rosemary oil “wonder” concoction. “No joke this changed my eyelashes so much and I hope it helps others. I’ve got many questions about my eyelashes, and I make my own serum to help them grow. Castor oil and rosemary oil,” she explains, adding that she uses the serum daily.
Another user, Krishna, also shares her results from using rosemary oil on her hair – and if her seriously thick and glossy lengths are anything to go by, her weekly oil treatments are working for her. “You need to dilute the rosemary oil with a carrier oil as it’s very concentrated, and you really have to massage the oil into your scalp,” she advises.
All sounds great, right? It’s worth remembering that when things from TikTok seem too good to be true, they often are. To find out if this is one of those cases, we’ve decided to do a dive into the trend with the help of Oliver Amodio, hair expert at Blue Tit East Village. Here’s what he has to say about the powers of rosemary oil…
Can rosemary oil help grow and strengthen hair?
“Rosemary oil does have many properties that are good for the scalp. It has anti-inflammatory properties that could help with problems associated with hair loss, such as a dry or inflamed scalp,” Oliver explains.
“It does also help increase blood flow to the area, which is one factor contributing to healthy hair growth. Because of this, using rosemary oil regularly in a mask or adding it to your shampoo can be beneficial. However, it's not the miracle product that will solve the problem, as there are multiple factors that play a part when it comes to hair loss.”
Oliver also mentions that quality sleep, a well-balanced diet, healthy vitamin intake and balanced hormones will also help promote hair growth. If your body is lacking any of these, you might need to speak to a healthcare professional if hair loss or hair thinning is bothering you.
So would he personally try out the oil himself? “Yes, but along with all the other life factors we've talked about,” Oliver says.
