Celebrities including Blake Lively and Khloe Kardashian have been spotted wearing the half up hairstyle

From Hailey Bieber’s cute half up bunches to Blake Lively and Khloe Kardashian’s touseled, voluminous ponytails, there are plenty of different styles you can rock with a half up ‘do, and it’s incredibly straightforward to do at home.

Celebrity hairstylist Kendall Dorsey explained how she achieved Rihanna’s latest date night look, where she wore a stunning half up, half down style whilst out with beau A$AP Rocky.

To create the look, Kendall started with freshly shampooed and conditioned hair, and applied a texture spray to Rihanna’s hair. Texture spray helps add volume and grip, so you don’t end up with hair slipping or coming undone. Work it through the underneath ‘half down’ section, before also

Next, Kendall sectioned Rihanna’s hair into two sections. The best guide is to start just above the ears, and take all the hair from the top and crown of the head, and clip it out of the way. Once you have even sections, you can fasten you ‘half up’ section in whichever style you’d like.

For Rihanna, Kendall opted for a messy bun, fastening it high at the crown of her head, and avoided smoothing the top or front sections to give it an effortless look. However, there are plenty of different styles you can incorporate into your half up style.

Here are some of our favourite half up half down styles:

Hailey Bieber’s bunches

Hailey Bieber is proof that it doesn’t matter how short your hair is; you can still rock this style. For her half up, half down look, Hailey veered away from the traditional ponytail, and went for two super sweet bunches. Keeping her middle part, she smoothed the top half of her hair back into two identical ponytails, before fastening them with pink ribbons – the ultimate way to elevate your half up style.

Blake Lively’s voluminous curls

Curls are a great way to give your half up half down style some added volume and drama. For Blake Lively’s ‘real life Barbie’ hair, stylist Jennifer Yepez smoothed Blake’s blonde locks straight back from her face, before fastening the top half of her hair up in an ultra high ponytail. The rest of her hair was given plenty of volume, and curled into tight corkscrew curls for an added dose of volume and texture then blends the top and bottom sections together seamlessly.

AJ Odudu’s sleek sections

AJ Odudu had a sleek version of the half up style

Extra shine help elevate this otherwise minimalist style, as proven by AJ Odudu as she showed off her super smooth and glossy locks for a Eurovision TV appearance. The top of her dark was gathered in a smaller section than usual, and smoothed back into a neat ponytail at the crown of her head. AJ’s front sections were left loose and gently curled around her face, whilst the rest of hair was also treated to the same loose waves, helping blend them together for an easy glam look.

Khloe Kardashian’s effortless waves

Khloe Kardashian is no stranger to a dramatic hair style, but her latest look is a masterclass in sophisticated everyday style. Khloe’s caramel blonde locks have been styled into effortless waves, with plenty of added volume and thickness to create a look that’s both soft and dramatic. She’s kept her centre parting sleek and sharp to emphasise the two front sections, which have been kept out of the top half’s updo, whilst the rest has been smoothed back into an easy up do.

Ariana Grande’s sweet updo

Ariana Grande is known for her half up half down hairstyle

Arguably the queen of the half up, half down style, Ariana Grande has returned to what was once her signature style during a video for her beauty brand r.e.m.beauty. The singer may have ditched her brunette curls for a sleek, platinum blonde shade, but her sweet half up, half down style was signature Ariana. Although most of the top half of her hair was smoothed back, she’d kept her side fringe free from the up do, sweeping it off to one side whilst the rest of the top section was fastened back.
