Scratch takes a look at the nail techs of the future, as Level 3 Nail Technology students at Truro & Penwith College share their progress…

Sarah Brenton-Sara, course coordinator, tutorial quality lead & lecturer at Truro & Penwith College, set nail students the task of creating a progression timeline. “Alongside written and verbal feedback, the group decided that displaying their work could generate feedback from visitors to the college, which is great for their progress,” Sarah explains.

Students also set about to creating nails to represent Truro & Penwith College‘s values, as well as the values held in British society. “Not only do the students learn these values, but they can then take this knowledge and understanding into their artwork and nail art, offering them a great way to have ownership of these values,” Sarah enthuses.

Work placements

Students studying Level 3 Nail Technology also attend a work placement for one day a week as a part of their college course. “Work placements offer a great way for students to build on their softer skills, and to observe a variation of technical skills from a different perspective away from college life. All evidence is logged on an additional portal, which enables students to build on their CV and portfolio evidence in preparation for their next steps, either progressing onto another course at Truro & Penwith College, or out into the industry.

“We’re proud of the success stories of our students, some securing employment after qualifying here at the college,” Sarah smiles. “We’ve built strong working relationships with our employers, and we are grateful to have their support. Employers are kept on our records and each year are visited by a new intake of students.”
